HIPAA compliance isn’t a checkbox you tick once - it’s a set of technical and administrative controls that have to hold up under audit. The engineering-facing pieces most teams underestimate are encryption at rest and in transit for all PHI, granular access logging on every read and write, and a signed Business Associate Agreement with every third-party vendor that touches patient data, including your cloud provider and any analytics tools.

Beyond the infrastructure, the process controls matter just as much: least-privilege access by default, automatic session timeouts, and a documented breach-notification procedure your team has actually rehearsed. Build these in from day one - retrofitting HIPAA controls onto a live system is dramatically more expensive than designing for them up front.
